Genres/Plots of Manga

• BL = Yaoi = Shonen-ai = Boy Love

• Yuri = Shojo-ai = Girl Love​

• Shojo = manga meant for teen girls

• Shonen = manga meant for teen boys

• Kodomo = manga meant for children

• Hentai = very sexual content

• Harem = one main male character with many females love interests (not necessarily sexual)

• Reverse Harem = one main female character with many male love interested (not necessarily sexual)

• Mecha = stories with robots in battle

• Isekai = main character is transported to a new world

• Light Novel = a "normal" book - usually in reference to a book written about the manga OR sometimes the book comes first and then a manga is created about it
   

Manga Creation

• Manhua = manga from China

• Manhwa = manga from South Korea

• Mangaka = someone who writes/illustrates manga

• Omnibus = 2-3 books combined into one thick book. This is usually done for older series during republishing.
   

Words You Hear Teens Say

• Glomp = a jump hug

• Senpai = older teen / mentor

• Sensei = teacher

• Baka = stupid

• Kawaii = cute

• Dattebyo = "believe it!?"/"ya know!?" often said by Naruto - does not actually have a meaning in real life

• Onii-san = older brother

• Onii-chan = older brother with affection

• Onee-san = older sister

• Onee-chan = older sister with affection

• Loli = those who sexualize young girls (gross!)

• Otaku = a person very fond of anime & manga

• Weeb = a person obsessed with Japanese culture, anime, & manga (usually negatively used)

• Cosplay = dressing up as your favorite character

• Chibi = cute/chubby shortened characters

• Lolita = doll like outfits or fashion style

• Fan Service = content of a sexualized nature to entice the fans. (examples: zoomed in drawing of cleavage, bare abs on muscular men, or wind blows and a girl's panties show from under her skirt, etc.)
